For this research, Dr. Quarles collaborated with NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA Ames Research Center, and the Space Telescope Science Institute. Using NASA\u2019s James Webb Space Telescope, scientists identified a potential planet located in the habitable zone of Alpha Centauri A, a region where temperatures might allow liquid water to exist. His research on galaxy evolution relates to processes that both create <a href=\"https:\/\/artsci.tamu.edu\/news\/2022\/08\/alma-witnesses-deadly-star-slinging-tug-of-war-between-merging-galaxies.html\">and prevent<\/a> (i.e., quench)  the formation of new stars from galaxies, as well as the physical mechanisms that transform a star-forming galaxy into a quiescent one. This work includes the 2023 discovery of <a href=\"https:\/\/artsci.tamu.edu\/news\/2023\/06\/webb-telescope-smokes-out-universes-most-distant-organic-molecules.html\">complex organic molecules in a galaxy more than 12 billion light-years away from Earth<\/a>, thus shedding light on the complex chemistry that accompanies the birth of new stars, even in the earliest periods of the universe\u2019s history. Dr. Spilker has <a href=\"https:\/\/justinspilker.com\/files\/CV_Spilker.pdf\">published prolifically<\/a> in journals such as <em>Nature<\/em>, <em>Astrophysical Journal<\/em>, and <em>Nature Astronomy<\/em>. She currently holds the Endowed Career Enhancement Chair in Physics. In 2024, Dr. Smith <a href=\"https:\/\/artsci.tamu.edu\/news\/2024\/06\/texas-aandm-astrophysicist-krista-smith-named-to-esa-nasa-science-team.html\">was one of six U.S. scientists selected by NASA<\/a> to serve on the joint European Space Agency (ESA)-NASA Science Team for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lisa.nasa.gov\/\">Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission<\/a>, which is set to begin searching for gravitational wave signatures in space within the next decade. This work includes research into the geological history of Mars\u2019 volcanic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/videos\/perseverance-rover-panorama-of-mars-jezero-crater\/\">Jezero Crater<\/a>, the landing site of NASA\u2019s Perseverance rover. Dr. Tice and his team revealed two distinct types of volcanic rocks, <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.tamu.edu\/stories\/new-study-unveils-volcanic-history-and-clues-to-ancient-life-on-mars\/\">indicating a complex volcanic history involving multiple lava flows with varying compositions<\/a>. More recently, Dr. Tice\u2019s work has revealed potential chemical signatures of <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.tamu.edu\/news\/2025\/09\/10\/researchers-uncover-potential-biosignatures-on-mars\/\">ancient Martian microbial life in rocks<\/a> examined by NASA\u2019s Perseverance rover. These findings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-025-09413-0\">published in Nature<\/a> by an international team of scientists, focus on a region of the Jezero Crater known as the Bright Angel formation. Her research is expanding our understanding of the stars\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/artsci.tamu.edu\/news\/2025\/06\/star-power-woodnext-foundation-funding-fuels-texas-am-research-at-the-forefront-of-nuclear-astrophysics.html\">specifically, the nuclear reactions that fuel them<\/a>. Nuclear synthesis has been the driving force behind the evolution of the universe from the first few microseconds after the Big Bang. In an effort to understand this evolution, Dr. Yennello is utilizing the <a href=\"https:\/\/artsci.tamu.edu\/chemistry\/contact\/profiles\/sherry-yennello.html\">newly available ability to produce beams of nuclei<\/a> removed from the valley of stability to investigate nuclear reaction mechanisms. The emission of fragments prior to equilibrium enables us to learn about cluster formation by studying the dynamics involved in the collision of two composite groups of nucleons. <a href=\"https:\/\/centaur.tamu.edu\/\">These reactions<\/a> are important for studying the structure, chemical composition, and evolution of neutron stars and as well as the dynamics of supernova explosions. Dr. Yannello is the Program Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/centaur.tamu.edu\/\">Texas A&amp;M Center for Excellence in Nuclear Training and University-Based Research (CENTAUR) Laboratory<\/a>. With a career that spans six decades, <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.tamu.edu\/news\/2016\/12\/15\/national-academy-of-inventors-selects-john-l-junkins-as-2016-nai-fellow\/\">Dr. Junkins has made significant contributions to the navigation, mechanics, and control of aerospace systems<\/a>.  Early in his career, he worked on concepts and inventions to support U.S. space missions. From laser range measurements made during Apollo missions 15, 16, and 17 in 1971-72, Dr. Junkins developed a precise model of the moon\u2019s shape. He later developed the first finite element representation of the Earth\u2019s gravity anomalies, which supported early inertial guidance methods for Polaris missiles. In more recent years, in collaboration with his students, Dr. Junkins developed several innovations related to spacecraft navigation. Dr. Majji <a href=\"https:\/\/www.me.uh.edu\/sites\/me-new\/files\/seminars\/2024\/brochure-majji.pdf\">has made fundamental contributions<\/a> in state estimation, astrodynamics, tensegrity systems, vision navigation, and system identification\u2014resulting in <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=paVge2QAAAAJ\">over 190 publications<\/a>\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c. He is currently Co-PI of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.edu\/faculty\/holzinger\/suri\">Space University Research Initiative (SURI)<\/a> along with scholars at UC Boulder, Texas A&amp;M, and Georgia Tech. <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.tamu.edu\/news\/2023\/10\/texas-am-joins-multimillion-dollar-moon-orbit-tracking-project.html\">This collaborative project aims to develop new capabilities to improve space domain awareness<\/a>. Currently, NASA and the Air Force can monitor objects like satellites, asteroids, and debris in low Earth orbit. The team will infer internal space object modes, sensor network architectures, and the art of the possible in \u2018beyond geosynchronous orbit\u2019 (XGEO) operations, as well as strategies for human-in-the-loop autonomous systems. He also serves as both Director of the Texas A&amp;M Space and Robotics Initiatives and Associate Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/space.tamu.edu\/institute\/\">Texas A&amp;M Space Institute<\/a>. His research focuses on robotic manipulation and mobility, specifically in <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.tamu.edu\/news\/2021\/06\/meen-advancing-space-robotics-chasing-a-new-frontier-at-texas-am.html\">relation to space robotics<\/a>. Before joining Texas A&amp;M in 2021, Dr. Ambrose spent decades at NASA\u2019s Johnson Space Center. There, <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.tamu.edu\/stories\/engineering-the-future-of-robotics-at-texas-am\/\">he was the chief of the Software, Robotics, and Simulation Division<\/a>\u2014where he led the development of advanced robotic systems for space missions. In early 2024, Dr. Ambrose was chosen to lead the <a href=\"https:\/\/govmarketnews.com\/space-force-taps-texas-am-to-lead-new-research-and-development-program-to-advance-in-space-operations\/\">Space Strategic Technical Institute for In-Space Operations<\/a> (SSTI-ISO). The SSTI-ISO is <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.tamu.edu\/news\/2024\/01\/revolutionizing-in-space-operations-technologies.html\">a collaborative effort involving leading academic institutions and industry partners<\/a> for a 5-year project. Using simulated moondust (because there\u2019s not enough lunar regolith on Earth for experimentation), Atkin and her colleagues grew chickpeas to seed in mixtures of up to 75% moondust. Using soil regeneration mechanisms from Earth, <a href=\"https:\/\/agrilifetoday.tamu.edu\/2024\/01\/30\/from-moon-dust-to-moon-soil\/\">Atkin leveraged the interaction between beneficial soil fungi and vermicompost, or worm manure, to create a fertile moondust<\/a>. These amendments help sequester toxic contaminants from the dust, change the soil structure for better hydraulic properties, and increase plant tolerance to stressors and toxins. As a result of her study, future moon-bound astronauts may have the opportunity to substitute a portion of their prepackaged foods with protein derived from crops grown on the lunar surface. NASA has provided a <a href=\"https:\/\/agrilifetoday.tamu.edu\/2025\/03\/10\/jess-atkin-a-moonshot-scientists-giant-leap-for-plant-kind\/\">$150-thousand NASA Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology grant<\/a>. The grant secures Atkin\u2019s work for three years. She has practiced medicine in almost every environment imaginable\u2014both on and off the planet. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/aunon.pdf\">Dr. Au\u00f1\u00f2n-Chancellor was selected by NASA in 2009 as one of 14 members<\/a>. In 2018, she spent 197 days in orbit as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/blogs\/spacestation\/2018\/12\/20\/expedition-57-trio-back-on-earth-after-197-day-space-mission\/\">Flight Engineer on the International Space Station<\/a> for Expeditions 56 and 57.  During her time in orbit, Dr. Au\u00f1\u00f2n-Chancellor\u2019s crew completed <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.tamu.edu\/faculty-listings\/au%C3%B1%C3%B2n-chancellor.html#241;%C3%B2n-chancellor\">over 150 different experiments in multiple fields, including<\/a> biology &amp; biotechnology, cancer, Parkinson\u2019s, and Alzheimer\u2019s research, materials science, nuclear physics, physical sciences, and Earth science. This work led to breakthroughs in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/station\/space-station-leads-to-breakthroughs-in-human-health-on-earth\/\">cancer treatment and in our understanding of the effects of microgravity on human physiology<\/a>. He joined Mission Operations at the Johnson Space Center in 1995 and was selected as an astronaut candidate in 1998. In 2011, Dr. Chamitoff served as a Mission Specialist on the last flight of Space Shuttle Endeavour, STS-134. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/chamitoff_gregory.pdf?emrc=68d57bb24e8cd\">During this mission, he performed operations with the Shuttle and Station Robotic Arms<\/a>, including the installation of a pallet of spare equipment (ELC-3) and the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS), a particle physics observatory that holds great promise for fundamental breakthroughs in our understanding of the Universe. Dr. Chamitoff also performed two spacewalks, the last of which marked the completion of ISS assembly and was the final spacewalk of the Space Shuttle Program. To date, he has logged more than 198 days in space. Dr. Chamitoff is Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/astrocenter.tamu.edu\/\">Texas A&amp;M AeroSpace Technology, Research &amp; Operations<\/a> (ASTRO). Selected as an astronaut in 1990, Dr. Curie-Gregg accrued 1000 hours in space as a mission specialist on four space shuttle missions\u2014STS-57, STS-70, STS-88, and STS-109. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/currie.pdf\">Following the Columbia tragedy in 2003, she was selected to lead the Space Shuttle Program\u2019s Safety and Mission Assurance Office<\/a>. She was then selected as a senior executive member of the NASA Engineering and Safety Center, serving for over a decade as the Chief Engineer at the Johnson Space Center before becoming Principal Engineer. Dr. Currie-Gregg\u2019s research currently focuses on <a href=\"https:\/\/safe.engr.tamu.edu\/\">advancing the health, performance, safety, and efficiency of aviators and astronauts operating in complex, high-risk environments<\/a>. Dr. Dunbar became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/dunbar_bonnie.pdf?emrc=8668c0\">a NASA astronaut in August 1981<\/a>. A veteran of five space flights, Dr. Dunbar has logged more than 1,208 hours (50 days) in space. She served as a mission specialist on STS 61-A in 1985, STS-32 in 1990, and STS-71 in 1995. She was also the Payload Commander on STS-50 in 1992 and STS-89 in 1998. Dr. Dunbar retired from NASA to serve as President and CEO of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museumofflight.org\/\">Seattle Museum of Flight<\/a> before joining Texas A&amp;M in 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/physicsfestival.tamu.edu\/bonnie-dunbar\/\">as a Chancellor Research Initiative Professor<\/a>. Her research focuses on <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.2514\/6.2021-1838\">microgravity fluid physics<\/a>, their effects on humans, and human-space systems\u2014such as the EVA suit and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ahsl.engr.tamu.edu\/research\/thermal-modeling-of-lcvg\/\">Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG)<\/a>. This work has been recognized with several accolades, including the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sigmaxi.org\/programs\/prizes-awards\/john-mcgovern\/award-winner\/bonnie-j.-dunbar\">John P. For example, Dr. Saganti led the first Prairie View designed-and-developed payload, the Radiation Particle Pixel Detector (PPD), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pvamu.edu\/raise\/space-payload\/ppd\/\">which was launched from Japan in December 2014 as part of the Asteroid Explorer<\/a>. This <a href=\"https:\/\/egg.astro.cornell.edu\/alfalfa\/ugradteam\/ugradteam.php\">consortium of 25 institutions<\/a>,  including WT, promotes undergraduate research <a href=\"https:\/\/par.nsf.gov\/servlets\/purl\/10065948\">within the context<\/a> of the extragalactic ALFA HI blind legacy survey project. The next phase will perform radio spectral line observations to trace the atomic gas content of the local universe. Overall, this highly successful program has had <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1907.06754\">a demonstrable impact<\/a> on science education and astronomy participation, yielding successful outcomes. Undergraduate students learn observation and data analysis techniques via lectures and group work. In partnership with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naic.edu\/ao\/landing\">Arecibo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/greenbankobservatory.org\/\">Green Bank<\/a> Observatories, the ALFA team organizes annual workshops, multiple research projects, and networking at national meetings. The LBV Planetarium\u2014which is open to the public for stargazing and educational engagement\u2014was upgraded in 2014 to one of the most sophisticated planetaria in the state of Texas. Mr. Davis joined Texas A&amp;M this same year, following a Master\u2019s in Planetarium Education. He has since written and produced roughly 25 shows for the LBV Planetarium in addition to organizing regular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kgns.tv\/2025\/10\/06\/tamiu-host-lecture-dark-matter-universes-mysteries\/\">guest speakers<\/a> and events.  As the only planetarium within a 150-mile radius, the LBV Planetarium <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tamiu.edu\/newsinfo\/2025\/02\/spacecommissionvisit22705.shtml\">serves as a vital hub for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and outreach<\/a>. The content produced by Mr. Davis consequently plays a crucial role in expanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebridgestudentnews.com\/2022\/11\/01\/science-tamiu-planetarium-promotes-scientific-literacy\/\">scientific literacy<\/a>, knowledge about astronomy, and space exploration in South Texas.
