Our previous posts\u00a0looked at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tamus.edu\/data-science\/2023\/06\/01\/trends-in-community-college-enrollment\/\">enrollment trends<\/a> at community colleges, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tamus.edu\/data-science\/2023\/06\/15\/importance-of-dual-credit-for-texas-community-colleges\/\">importance of dual credit in Texas<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tamus.edu\/data-science\/2023\/07\/15\/challenging-reality-of-community-college-to-university-transfers-in-texas\/\">challenges facing transfer students<\/a>\u00a0seeking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tamus.edu\/data-science\/2023\/08\/01\/upwardly-mobile-the-transition-from-2-to-4-year-institutions\/\">transition from 2-to-4 year institutions<\/a>. In this blog post, we will look at data from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board&#8217;s (THECB) &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/reportcenter.highered.texas.gov\/reports\/legislative\/transfer-report-2022\/\">Transfer Report 2022<\/a>&#8221; that shows how successful community college transfers have been in earning a bachelor&#8217;s degree within four years of being classified as a college junior.<\/p><div><i>Completion Rates for Junior Cohorts<\/i> is\u00a0one of the primary success metrics used in the THECB&#8217;s Transfer Report.\u00a0To create the junior cohorts, undergraduate students enrolled as juniors during the fall semester were included.\u00a0Students who were juniors at the same university where they were first-time-in-college students were identified as &#8220;non-transfer&#8221; students, while those who were juniors who had transferred from a community college were identified as &#8220;community college transfer&#8221; students. Cohort members were then tracked for four academic years to see if they graduated with a bachelors degree in order to calculate a completion rate.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><ul><li>As can be seen in the <u><b>Statewide Trends<\/b><\/u> visualization below, <b>86% of\u00a0non-transfer students and 68% of community college transfers in the fall 2017 cohort earned their degree within four years of becoming juniors at their university. <\/b>This represents an 18-percentage point difference between the two cohorts.<\/li><li>Over the course of the 13 years in the Transfer Report, the <b>averages remained fairly steady for each group<\/b>: 84% for non-transfer students and 66% for community college transfer students in the junior cohorts.<\/li><li>Under the <b><u>Peer Group Comparisons<\/u><\/b> tab, we can see that the two Research Institutions (Texas A&amp;M University and University of Texas at Austin) collectively have the highest graduation rates for both non-transfer and community college transfer students. <b>The group of Doctoral Institutions have the lowest graduation rates for non-transfer students at 79%, while community college transfers fare worst at the Master&#8217;s Institutions in Texas with a graduation rate of 62%<\/b>.<\/li><\/ul><h6><b>Note<\/b>: On the University Comparisons visualization, universities are shown within their THECB-defined Peer Group. Use the drop-down menu at the top to change group selection.<\/h6>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-f0c978f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"f0c978f\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-214efa2\" data-id=\"214efa2\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9416a1a elementor-widget elementor-widget-html\" data-id=\"9416a1a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"html.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<script type='module' src='https:\/\/tableau.tamu.edu\/javascripts\/api\/tableau.embedding.3.latest.min.js'><\/script><tableau-viz id='tableau-viz' src='https:\/\/tableau.tamu.edu\/t\/TAMUS\/views\/BlogPost2023-08-15\/StatewideTrends' width='1279' height='800' toolbar='bottom' ><\/tableau-viz>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-302e5fe elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"302e5fe\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f48a421\" data-id=\"f48a421\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-be2b513 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"be2b513\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>Within the\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><u>University Comparisons<\/u><\/span>\u00a0tab, Texas A&amp;M University has the overall highest graduation rate for non-transfer students in the junior cohort at 95% and is tied with UT Austin at 89% of CC transfer students earning a degree within four years.<\/li><li>For Emerging Research institutions,<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u00a0UT Dallas leads with a 91% graduation rate for non-transfer students in the junior cohort, while Texas Tech University&#8217;s 81% graduation rate for CC transfer students is the highest in this peer group.\u00a0<\/span>TTU also has the smallest achievement gap at 7 percentage points.<\/li><li>In the combined Doctoral &amp; Comprehensive visualization,\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Stephen F. Austin State University had the highest graduation rates for both non-transfer (89%) and CC transfer (82%) students in the junior cohort<\/span>. Texas Southern University had the lowest graduation rates for non-transfer students at 64% and Lamar University had the lowest graduation rates for CC transfer students at 54%.<\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Sul Ross State University (80% vs 72%) and Angelo State University (87% vs 86%) were the only two universities where CC transfer students had higher graduation rates than non-transfer students in the THECB&#8217;s junior cohort data<\/span>.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-03f6192 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"03f6192\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-10e147c\" data-id=\"10e147c\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-84054b2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"84054b2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">So What?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-dd1a850 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"dd1a850\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-224a564\" data-id=\"224a564\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a1c77be elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a1c77be\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There has been a long-held sentiment in higher education that community college transfers are more successful in earning a bachelor&#8217;s degree than first-time-in-college students who start at a four-year university. Depending on when you start the &#8220;graduation clock&#8221;, that statement can be accurate.<\/p><ul><li>For example, the THECB&#8217;s statewide 6-year graduation rate <span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">for the fall 2016 first-time-in-college cohort\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">was 51% when you only count those students who graduated by AY2021-2022 from the same university where they started. <\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">By comparison, the 4-year statewide graduation rate for community college transfer students in the fall 2018 cohort was 57% for those finishing a bachelor&#8217;s degree from the same university as their initial transfer. <\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">However, when you hold the starting point constant, as shown in the THECB&#8217;s Junior Cohort study, non-transfer, or &#8220;native&#8221; students generally hold a large margin over community college transfer students when comparing 4-year graduation rates. <\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\"><b>The overall 18-percentage point difference between non-transfer and community college transfer students in the Junior Cohort Study highlights the challenge facing higher education in Texas as we collectively seek to close achievement gaps while increasing educational attainment for all students, especially those seeking to use university-level education as a means for upward mobility for their families, communities, and generations to come.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the academic calendar signaling the start of a new school year, this blog post will serve as the last installment of our summer series on community colleges in Texas.
