{"id":20471,"date":"2023-06-15T20:20:01","date_gmt":"2023-06-15T20:20:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tamus.edu\/data-science\/?p=20471"},"modified":"2024-10-24T19:24:40","modified_gmt":"2024-10-24T19:24:40","slug":"importance-of-dual-credit-for-texas-community-colleges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tamus.edu\/data-science\/2023\/06\/15\/importance-of-dual-credit-for-texas-community-colleges\/","title":{"rendered":"The Importance of Dual Credit for Texas Community Colleges"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"20471\" class=\"elementor elementor-20471\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-31200cc elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"31200cc\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5230732\" data-id=\"5230732\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-00cc615 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"00cc615\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>One of the most prolific trends in the past 20 years has been the exponential growth of dual credit students who are earning college-level credits while still attending high school. <b>The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) reported that more than 186,000 students were officially enrolled in dual credit courses across all institutions in Texas in fall 2021, with 92% of dual credit students enrolled at Texas public community colleges. <\/b>With dual credit students comprising an ever-increasing proportion of enrollments at two-year campuses, this blog post seeks to better understand the magnitude of dual credit enrollment at public community colleges nationally and across states in the past two decades.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\"><b><u>Dual Credit Enrollment Trends<\/u><\/b><\/span><\/p><p>A formidable challenge when trying to make national comparisons of dual credit enrollment is the lack of a standardized data source. Following the methodology used by the\u00a0<a style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\" href=\"https:\/\/ccrc.tc.columbia.edu\/\">Community College Research Center <\/a>(CCRC)\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">at Teachers College, Columbia University<\/span>, we used\u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">the number of students &#8220;under the age of 18&#8221; enrolled during the fall semester at community colleges as a proxy for dual credit enrollment (<a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/ipeds\/survey-components\/8\">IPEDS Data<\/a>). We will use the &#8220;under 18&#8221; designation and &#8220;dual credit&#8221; students interchangeably in the discussion below.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/app\/profile\/john.fink\/viz\/UndergraduateEnrollmentTrendsbySector\/Summary\">CCRC&#8217;s enrollment dashboard<\/a>, there were just over 201,000 &#8220;under 18&#8221; students at community colleges in 1997. <\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\"><b>By 2021, that number increased more than 400% to 1.05 million dual credit students. <\/b>For context, the CCRC reports that total enrollment at community colleges nationwide during that time period increased by just 12%. <i style=\"font-weight: bold;\">This means that in 2021, nearly 1-out-of-every-5 community college students in America was a dual credit student<\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b><u>Texas Leads in Dual Credit Enrollment<\/u><\/b><\/p><p>As can be seen in the top visualization below, Texas has long been the leader in the number of high school-aged students attending community colleges as dual credit students. <b>From 2001 to 2021, the &#8220;under 18&#8221; group of students at public community colleges in Texas increased by almost 500% from 29K to 171K. <\/b>In fall 2021, Texans made up more than 16% of the total number of dual credit students in America, with California second at 11% of the nationwide total. By way of comparison,\u00a0<b>California had 50,000 fewer &#8220;under 18&#8221; students (120K) at community colleges than Texas in the 2021 IPEDS data, while\u00a0New York had just under 56K and Florida had just over 45K total\u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">dual credit students enrolled in 2021.<\/span><\/b><\/p><h6><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Note: Even though the &#8220;under the age of 18&#8221; definition excludes students who are actually 18-years-old when they enroll during the fall semester, it provides the most comprehensive proxy to examine trends in dual credit. In the case of Texas, the 171,251 total &#8220;under 18&#8221; students reported in the IPEDS data differed by only 100 students from the THECB&#8217;s published &#8220;dual credit&#8221; student enrollment of 171,151 at public community colleges in Texas\u00a0<\/span>in fall 2021<span style=\"color: #7a7a7a; font-family: Open Sans, sans-serif;\">.<\/span>\u00a0Additionally, IPEDS only requires submission of age-related data every other year, which explains the gap in data points on the &#8220;even&#8221; years in the visualizations below.<\/h6>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-f0c978f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"f0c978f\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-214efa2\" data-id=\"214efa2\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9416a1a elementor-widget elementor-widget-html\" data-id=\"9416a1a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"html.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<script type='text\/javascript' src='https:\/\/tableau.tamu.edu\/javascripts\/api\/viz_v1.js'><\/script><div class='tableauPlaceholder' style='width: 1279px; height: 800px;'><object class='tableauViz' width='1279' height='800' style='display:none;'><param name='host_url' value='https%3A%2F%2Ftableau.tamu.edu%2F' \/> <param name='embed_code_version' value='3' \/> <param name='site_root' value='&#47;t&#47;TAMUS' \/><param name='name' value='BlogPost2023-06-15&#47;Dashboard1' \/><param name='tabs' value='no' \/><param name='toolbar' value='yes' \/><param name='showAppBanner' value='false' \/><\/object><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9f29785 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9f29785\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-44e6517\" data-id=\"44e6517\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bf91109 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bf91109\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The bottom visualization shows what percentage &#8220;under 18&#8221; students comprised in terms of total undergraduate enrollment at public community colleges. In 2001, dual credit students accounted for\u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">5.6% of the total enrollment at public two-year colleges nationally, with that percentage increasing to 18.3% in 2021.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">By comparison, the dual credit percentage in Texas\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">increased by almost 19 percentage points from 6.9% in 2001 to 25.7% in 2021, ranking Texas 15th in fall 2021 when compared to the other states in America.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">\u00a0Notable state-level comparisons in fall 2021 were New York (23.8%, ranked 17th overall), Florida (12.2%, ranked 40th overall), and California (9.8%, ranked 43rd overall).<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-03f6192 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"03f6192\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-10e147c\" data-id=\"10e147c\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-84054b2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"84054b2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">So What?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-dd1a850 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"dd1a850\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-224a564\" data-id=\"224a564\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a1c77be elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a1c77be\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Overlaying a simple trend line on these data would seem to indicate that almost one-third of all community college students in Texas will be dual credit students within the next decade. The vast numbers of dual credit students in Texas is certainly an important component in conversations about the future of higher education in Texas. However, viewing enrollment trend data is only part of the story.
