This blog post turns our analytical lens to reviewing one measure of teacher quality in the form of the Texas Education Agency&#8217;s (TEA) <a href=\"https:\/\/tea.texas.gov\/texas-educators\/preparation-and-continuing-education\/principal-surveys-to-evaluate-educator-preparation-programs\">Principal Survey of First-Year Teachers<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-4786cc7 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"4786cc7\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-cd17e58\" data-id=\"cd17e58\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3f022d6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3f022d6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">TEA's Principal Survey of First-Year Teachers<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-204256d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"204256d\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-34ecc36\" data-id=\"34ecc36\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4ba62ab elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4ba62ab\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Data from the 2021 survey administration provided by TEA reports first-year teacher ratings by a number of variables: gender, race\/ethnicity, EPP type, and certification level. In the visualizations below, we explore average ratings of items within survey sections while disaggregating the results by race\/ethnicity and EPP type. As a reminder,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Traditional EPPs include all pathways to certification (traditional, alternative, and post-baccalaureate) that are offered by a college or university in Texas, while Alternative EPPs are &#8220;nontraditional routes to certification&#8221; that are not affiliated with a college or university that allow individuals with a bachelor&#8217;s degree to serve as teachers-of-record while completing teacher certification requirements in Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><u>Survey Results (Overall)<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 2.5em; list-style-position: outside; list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>Regardless of survey section, <b>first-year teachers trained by Traditional EPPs at universities out-perform their colleagues who were trained by Alternative EPPs<\/b>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Overall, teachers from Traditional EPPs had an average rating of 2.45 (0-3 point scale) versus teachers from Alternative EPPs who had an average of 2.27.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><u>Survey Results by Ethnicity, Section, and EPP Type<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 2.5em; list-style-position: outside; list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">When we disaggregate the data by race\/ethnicity, we see that<\/span><b style=\"font-size: 16px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\"><i> gaps between Traditional EPPs and Alternative EPPs are even greater for teachers who are Persons of Color<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Using the drop-down menu at the right, we can change the data visualization to isolate specific race\/ethnicity groups.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\">For first-year teachers who are Black or African American, the largest gap between Traditional and Alternative EPPs is in the Overall Evaluation, as teachers from university-based EPPs are rated 0.19 points higher (2.33 vs 2.14) than those from Alternative EPPs on the 4-point scale.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Hispanic or Latino first-year teachers have the largest gap between EPP groups in Overall Evaluation as well, as Traditional EPP-trained teachers had an average rating of 2.46 versus 2.32 for Alternative EPPs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><u>Teacher Effectiveness and Student Achievement<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 2.5em; list-style-position: outside; list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>For the final survey item that uses the 10-point scale, <b>first-year teachers from Traditional EPPs are also rated higher than those from Alternative EPPs across all race\/ethnicity categories<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">First-year teachers who are <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\"><b>Hispanic or Latino from Traditional EPPs are the highest-rated group with an average of 7.59 out of 10 points<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">. This is 0.12 points higher than White teachers from Traditional EPPs, and 0.33 points higher than Hispanic or Latino first-year teachers from Alternative EPPs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\">First-year teachers\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px; background-color: #ffffff;\">who are Black or African American\u00a0<\/span>from Traditional EPPs are rated almost a half-point higher (7.30 vs 6.84) than Black or African American teachers from Alternative EPPs.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The second-highest rated race\/ethnicity category is &#8220;Other&#8221; at an average rating of 7.56 for Traditional EPP-trained teachers, as Other is catch-all category used by TEA for anyone not in one of the three primary race\/ethnicity groups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><u>Technical Notes:<\/u><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px; background-color: #ffffff;\">The TEA&#8217;s Principal Survey is a<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; background-color: #ffffff;\">\u00a0legislatively-mandated instrument intended to evaluate the quality of EPPs that is completed each spring for those first-year certified teachers who have taught at the specific school for a minimum of 5 months during that academic year. The campus leader rates each first-year teacher across 53 items that are grouped into six sections: Planning, Instruction, Learning Environment, Professional Practices &amp; Responsibilities, Students with Disabilities, and Emergent Bilingual Students. Principals rate teachers in these sections and an &#8220;Overall Evaluation&#8221; question using a 4-point scale that includes &#8220;Not At All Prepared (0)&#8221;, &#8220;Not Sufficiently Prepared (1)&#8221;, &#8220;Sufficiently Prepared (2)&#8221;, or &#8220;Well Prepared (3)&#8221;. Principals also assign a rating of &#8220;teacher&#8217;s influence on student achievement&#8221; using a 10-point scale that spans from &#8220;1 &#8211; The teacher is unacceptable&#8221; to &#8220;10 &#8211; The teacher is exceptional, in the top 2% of teachers I&#8217;ve supervised.&#8221;<\/span><u><br \/><\/u><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-77e2484 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"77e2484\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5e7b627\" data-id=\"5e7b627\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-91df017 elementor-widget elementor-widget-html\" data-id=\"91df017\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"html.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<script type='text\/javascript' src='https:\/\/tableau.tamu.edu\/javascripts\/api\/viz_v1.js'><\/script><div class='tableauPlaceholder' style='width: 1237px; height: 800px;'><object class='tableauViz' width='1237' height='800' style='display:none;'><param name='host_url' value='https%3A%2F%2Ftableau.tamu.edu%2F' \/> <param name='embed_code_version' value='3' \/> <param name='site_root' value='&#47;t&#47;TAMUS' \/><param name='name' value='blog-2022-07-15&#47;SurveyResultsOverall' \/><param name='tabs' value='yes' \/><param name='toolbar' value='yes' \/><param name='showAppBanner' value='false' \/><\/object><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-03f6192 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"03f6192\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-10e147c\" data-id=\"10e147c\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-84054b2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"84054b2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">So What?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9b5c193 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9b5c193\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-e826947\" data-id=\"e826947\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-263a4ea elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"263a4ea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Based on the analysis of Principal Survey data, first-year teachers who earned their teaching certification through Traditional EPPs not only out-performed first-year teachers from Alternative EPPs on each survey item in general, but also when comparing results within race\/ethnicity groups. <b>This means that the average rating for Traditional EPP-trained teachers is higher than the average rating of Alternative EPPs across each of the 200 possible item-level comparisons in the survey data<\/b>.
