A person with a chronic disease may need to see a doctor or specialist often. Others may have occasional injuries or infections. Treatment of disease and injury is considered medical care.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, What Is Preventive Care?<\/strong><br \/>Proper diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle can all help avoid certain health problems. Preventive care does the same thing. Preventive screening can help catch problems early, before you notice symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Yearly preventive exams and screenings may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A physical exam<\/li>\n<li>Screening for things like blood pressure and cholesterol levels<\/li>\n<li>Vaccines you need to prevent illness<\/li>\n<li>Mammogram screening<\/li>\n<li>Colon cancer screening<\/li>\n<li>Cervical cancer screening<\/li>\n<li>Diabetes screening<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Sometimes Preventive Care and Medical Care Cross Paths<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are both\u00a0<a title=\"\u201cscreening\u201d and \u201cdiagnostic\u201d versions of many tests\" href=\"https:\/\/connect.bcbstx.com\/understanding-benefits\/b\/weblog\/posts\/medical-tests-preventive-vs-diagnostic\" data-di-id=\"di-id-bc11f68e-8b069cf7\">\u201cscreening\u201d and \u201cdiagnostic\u201d versions of many tests<\/a>, such as mammograms and colonoscopies. Diagnostic tests take a closer look to see if disease is present.<\/p>\n<p>The technology for diagnostic and medical tests may be similar. But where and when you take them and who reads the results are different. The out-of-pocket costs may also be different.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a good idea to find out what your out-of-pocket costs will be before you schedule your appointment. Check with your doctor\u2019s office to see which kind of test you\u2019ll be getting. And check your benefits or call the customer service number on your member ID card to get the details about your coverage and costs for the test.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Fix What Isn\u2019t Broken?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even if you feel healthy, once a year you should get a preventive checkup from your doctor.
