Tarleton State University is located about 60 miles southwest of Fort Worth in Stephenville, which is included in Norman Crampton’s "The 100 Best Small Towns in America." Tarleton is the second-largest university in the A&M System and is experiencing significant new growth in engineering and health care-related programs as well as extending various undergraduate and graduate programs into Fort Worth, Waco, Weatherford and Cleburne. Tarleton State University-Central Texas, an upper-level institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees, was opened in Killeen in 1999.

  • Tarleton is the largest non-land-grant university in the country and produces more agricultural education majors than any other university in the United States.
  • Tarleton’s Laboratory for Wellness and Motor Behavior houses a unique training machine called “The Psycle™” for individuals with quadriplegia, paraplegia, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, or other mobility impairments.
  • The first mascot for Tarleton’s athletic teams was the plowboy. Today, the Plowboys are a spirit organization recognized by their white shirts, hats and purple chaps.
  • Tarleton State is one of only five campuses across the United States, and the only university in Texas, selected by the CarMax Foundation to receive funding to establish a campus-based University Mothers Against Drunk Driving program.
