Tarleton coeds win national basketball crown

(Stephenville)—The Division of Recreational Sports at Tarleton State University has another national trophy for its showcase. A team of nine women from Tarleton competed in the 2006 National ACIS Basketball Tournament in Anaheim, Calif., and brought the national title back home to Stephenville.

The women defeated Tidewater Community College of Virginia 46 to 43 in the championship round to claim the tournament championship. They downed the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse 43 to 40 in the semi-finals.

Tarleton earned their bid to the national competition by winning the 2006 ACIS Regional tournament held on the campus of Texas Christian University in April. They defeated a team from Oklahoma State University 45-34 in the regional finals.

At the National Tournament, Tarleton's Kaci Fulton of Rosebud was named Most Valuable Players and Savannah Sleeper of Hamilton was named to the All Tournament team.

Other team members were Christabell Mariner of Pago Pago, Michelle Martin of Amarillo, Amy Rice of Plainview, Ashley Rodriguez of Baird, Kristen Stowe of Stephenville, Afton Stowers of Stephenville and Laci Townsend of Hico. End of story
