Jorge D. Canales Managing Counsel, Litigation & Dispute Resolution
Jorge serves The Texas A&M University System and the Office of General Counsel as Managing Counsel, Litigation and Dispute Resolution. In that capacity, Jorge manages the litigation filed in federal and state courts throughout the state against the A&M System, its member institutions and employees if they are sued for actions taken within the course and scope of their employment. He also represents the A&M System and its member institutions in internal hearings and before federal and state regulatory agencies like the Department of Education, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Texas Workforce Commission. In addition, Jorge advises the A&M System and its member institutios on general employment matters.
Jorge also serves as lead counsel for A&M-Corpus Christi and A&M-San Antonio and is alternate counsel for A&M-Kingsville and A&M International. As a higher education attorney, he endeavors to practice "preventive" law by addressing relevant legal and policy requirements to ensure compliance and fairness, and by advising administrators on a broad range of legal issues.
Jorge earned a J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center and is licensed by the Texas Supreme Court and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas. He is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys and the Texas Association of State University Attorneys. Jorge has been practicing law for twenty-four years, with seven years of relevant public education law experience representing school districts and nine years of exclusive higher education law experience representing universities. He is a native of the Rio Grande Valley and has ten years of prior professional administrative experience at two other public universities. He is fluent in Spanish. He thoroughly enjoys the practice of higher education law, especially the diversity of people and issues.
